The AIRS Program Office, in collaboration with American Airlines (AAL), ACSS (Aviation Communication & Surveillance Systems, LLC), NATCA, and the Allied Pilots Association (APA), recently completed a high-impact flight trial focused on evaluating the ACSS SafeRoute+ avionics system.
This initiative aimed to demonstrate the operational feasibility and value of ADS-B In capabilities using a retrofit solution in a real-world, large-scale environment. The trial engaged ZAB (Albuquerque Center) controllers and management, with an initial schedule of one year to assess how this technology could enhance safety, traffic flow, and overall efficiency in the National Airspace System (NAS).
How We Helped
Our team played a central role in leading all operational aspects of the trial, ensuring coordination, collaboration, and actionable outcomes across all stakeholders. We provided support in:
-
Designing training, phraseology, and procedures
-
Identifying key areas for Interval Management (IM) operations
-
Monitoring operations and schedules to ensure alignment across agencies
-
Facilitating weekly virtual and monthly in-person working sessions
Through these collaborative sessions, we made sure that all participants—from pilots and controllers to airline representatives and technical partners—had a voice in shaping the direction of the trial.
Results & Impact
The flight trial generated valuable operational data from multiple sources, including controllers, pilots, and the avionics manufacturer. Thanks to our leadership and cross-functional facilitation, we were able to address early challenges by refining phraseology, updating procedures, and refocusing efforts on data-rich operational zones.
The trial exceeded expectations, prompting a successful extension for a second year. The data collected was critical in:
-
Recommending algorithm adjustments to ACSS SafeRoute+
-
Validating the efficiency of ADS-B In capabilities in an operational environment
-
Supporting a strong case for future NAS integration of retrofit ADS-B In technologies
Looking Ahead
This project underscores the value of industry and government collaboration in advancing aviation innovation. As the skies become more dynamic and data-driven, initiatives like this ensure that safety, efficiency, and technology move forward—together.
Our team is proud to have led this effort and looks forward to supporting continued modernization across the NAS.
